I quote Sally...."Think of an interesting event. It might be a celebration, a visit to an art gallery, film, or a hobby show. Write it up in your blog ". And there's the rub. "An interesting event". I'm not one of life's enthusiasts, and enthusiasm makes me slightly uncomfortable. It's probably because I 'm a brummie that my natural way of looking at the world is with a bit of a tut. A hobby show? Have you lost your mind? They're like cat nip to enthusiasts - all trying out the latest developments in balsa wood or testing miniature lighting systems for their dollshouses. I don't mean to say that I don't love some things but I feel it is a bit pushy to be enthusiastic about them. Enthusiasm is only a short rant away from evangelicalism. And then there's the responsibility. It doesn't bother some people, they say, all fired up, "you MUST see this film/read this book/see this exhibition", and, gullible fool that I am, I believe them and off I go. Velazquez at the National a couple of years ago was very good. I really like REM and the Beatles. My favourite film is True Romance. Hmmm..300 words of sustained interest is going to be a struggle.
Looking promising though! Liked the Balsa Wood bit - nice piece!
ReplyDeleteThis is really good piece. You could make this into a mini feature examining whether or not Brummies have the same slant on life as other regional groups?? I really like your take on this - dare I say 'enthusiasm'.... There's a lot of energy and you say a lot in only a few lines. If you were making this into a feature, you could interview well-known Brummies (there's Carl Chinn, local historian, broadcaster etc etc - quite a bit on him on Wiki) and similar historians/personalities for other localities...linguists, behavioural psychologist etc etc...
ReplyDeleteThere's no end to it. It could make a great piece.....all while taking in this week's lesson of Who (you), What (investigating enthusiasm), Why (to see if there is a regional difference), When (at this moment/a snap shot of regional behaviour in 2009), Where (Birmingham) How (what makes other regional populations different?).
I like your style of writing...slightly ironic and rebellious and very energetic...
Sally
I can completely relate to this post! There is a lot of pressure to have passions and enthusiasms but what if you just "really like" a lot of different things...
